Bangalore vs. Mysore

I am going to treat you to some numbers.

Taking into consideration the least expensive mode of transport every time, I am going to compare the costs of going to watch a movie in Bangalore, and going all the way to Mysore to watch the same movie.

(All costs in Rupees)

Going to watch a movie in Bangalore.

Location: Inox, Garuda Mall.
Bus fare from home to Garuda Mall: 10 + 10 = 20 [We have to change buses]
Ticket = 150
Bus fare from Garuda Mall to home: 10 + 10 = 20
TOTAL: Rs.190

Going to Mysore just to watch a movie.

Location: Sterling, Mysore.

Bus fare from home to Bangalore Railway Station = 10
Train fare between Bangalore and Mysore = 50
Bus fare from Mysore Railway Station to Sterling = 8
Movie ticket = 35 (Balcony)
Bus fare from Sterling to Mysore Railway Station = 8
Train fare from Mysore to Bangalore = 50
Bus fare from Bangalore Railway Station to home = 10.
TOTAL: Rs.171.

A difference of Rs.19, favourably tilted towards Mysore.

Now, considering the fact that I usually travel by autorickshaw within the city, and not in bus, and substituting auto fares for bus fares everywhere [Won't bother you with further calculations], the price comes up to
Bangalore - Rs. 350.
Mysore - Rs. 300

Now if you say that I will be saving time by watching the movie in Bangalore, let me tell you that it will take me a total of 6 hours to go up and down from Mysore by train, and it will take me 4 hours to go to Inox and come back, in peak hour traffic.

Next. A visit to a very upscale beauty parlour in Mysore, cost my sister, my aunt and me, the same amount that I would have shelled out only for myself, if I visited my next-door-not-very-sophisticated-parlour in Bangalore. And we finished the whole thing in 1 hour flat, including commuting.

If you want to go anywhere in Mysore, the auto fare won't be more than Rs.30. In fact they say, "Oh that shop is very very far away. Almost thirty bucks by auto!". For me in Bangalore, a place 30 bucks away is my backyard.

I can go on and on giving you examples, but it hurts me all the more to put it all in writing. So I will stop here. The only thing I can say, is that it is worth taking a Friday off and making a weekend trip to Mysore once in every three months, and finishing all your work and getting back. Other than the inexpensiveness and convenience, an added advantage is the huge amount of fun I have with my aunt and cousins, and the utmost pampering I get from my grandparents.

I rest my case.

Wow!

You've spent quite some time on this, haven't you?

Raj said...

Btw, is Sterling as good as Inox?

Otherwise, you can bring Rex into the picture and things will change

Shruthi said...

@Raj: No, haven't really spent too much time on it :) It just popped into my head when I heard how much the rates in Sterling are :D
True, if I bring Rex into the picture, it should turn out equal :) But it so happened that the movie I wanted to watch wa in Inox and Sterling. Hence that comparison.

well among all the numbers given, the important thing that has been missed is Time and Energy..2 hours still menas a lot....neways i have been to mysore twice its a good city to visit once in a while.

What if we do not have any relatives in Mysore :)

Shruthi said...

@Abhinav: Time and energy - take your pick.
4 hours in the middle of smoke and noise and heat and dust and pollution.
6 hours cruising through green fields lakes, rivers and little towns.
:) Well, talking about myself, I would take the 6 hours :D

@Anon: Then, hard luck :) And please leave your name next time ;)

Just loved this post! So good and so valid !
Let me not write anything more abt the topic 'what I am still doing in this dirty city' ( Blore ofcourse ) as it hurts me all the more to put it all in writing ;)

btw I wud just like to add I go to Mysore every weekend without fail :)
Sterling is playing RDB now! Was shopping at the Bata Shoe shop opposite that theater this weekend !!

@Anon: Thank you ;) Bangalore might be dirty in comparison to Mysore, but I love it all the same ;)
And please do not forget to leave your name, next time! ;)

@Suyog: Ha ha :) And same as above ;)

@Maddy: :D reminds me of that cholesterol joke - "You cheat! It says 'cholesterol free' on this pack, you haven't given it to me!"

Mysoreans never like Blore and vice-versa! Thats the eternal truth ;)
Both have to love Blore by compulsion and both love Mysore by its very nature :)

Anyway wud not pull your leg much abt that.

Read all your posts yesterday...some very nice writing there! btw if you have not read biChi's short stories ( Its a small book ) read that. We have known him for his humor but this is the other side of him which is so good ( Good is an oxymoron here as its mostly sad stories )

PS : Bit confused which name to use :D Will leave my name when I clear my doubts!

Nagisi nagutha koodi baaLuvudu Kaliyo

@Anon: That was a very astute observation indeed! Makes me want to know your name all the more ;)

Shruthi, how long till Mysore becomes a fond memory like B'lore, I was there in 1992 and then many times again recently, I wonder if the same can happen to Mysore too?

Shruthi said...

@Mridula: I really hope that doesn't happen to Mysore. Bangalore was like Mysore once upon a time, but I was too young to appreciate it.

Shruti, yr post remimded me of M'lore. 30 bucks is all it takes to watch a movie and if your auto fare is more than 25 then it's ridiculous. Just like u, I travel by auto in B'lore n have never stepped into a bus. I'm so used to seeing 50+ nos. on the auto meteres that I now feel that i'm saving like hell when I'm in M'lore!

Shruthi said...

@Aparna: Exactly! I had been to Mangalore 2 months ago, and was struck by how similar it was to Mysore in these respects!
